Winter is almost over, and I only have a few weeks left of the season until the long wait when the green leaves decide to emerge on the trees. I only have two more sessions this season, and I am always happy to hear from tourists, with dogs I don’t know, and breeds I haven’t photographed yet. So when Triton’s owner emailed me, I was very excited! He is a Landseer Newfoundland, a black and white coloration not as common in the breed. Interestingly, in some European countries the Landseer is considered a totally different breed than the black Newfoundland, with slightly different conformation. This photo shoot was a celebration of Triton still being on this earth at 8 years old….for a large breed dog, that is something to celebrate, as well as every birthday he will have after! We had to take it easy though, since he just had surgery for a torn CCL in January. Newfoundlands are stable breeds, not prone for bolting or getting snippy if they are unsure of something.
Triton showed his disdain for the camera in a different way.
I knew then I had my work cut out for me. He warmed up once we got to the river though, as if he knew the water was where he was supposed to be.
Ahhhh, happiness is a water dog all wet! Do I have snow on my nose? I can fix that.

We headed away from the river for a short hike in Mountain Village, but Triton was already becoming tired and I was worried about him overdoing it, especially in the deep snow. So we stayed on the path and took some scenic shots….which again proved difficult. I swear you would have thought he knew the direction I needed him to face, and he refused to even look towards the sun. I lost it in laughter and literally fell to the ground on my back, at which point Triton decided I would be a great pillow. He might act stubborn, but this guy has a heart of gold.
Oh, and look who has a sense of humor!! Every time I would give up on him, he would get sassy with me, flopping down, rolling, and pawing at me. Talk about playing hard to get! Check out the eye contact. He knew he was playing games with me behind the camera.
Oh no, Triton, I don’t buy the “I’m so shy” act anymore! Give it up!
Ending with a beauty shot, as usual. Melissa I am glad you found me, and I loved shooting Triton, despite our slow start. He’s a charming boy who just wants to make sure you are worth giving his attention to, you have to work for it! I’ll have your gallery soon – give Triton a kiss on the nose from me, and I hope he is recovering well from his surgery.
