Goodbye, Sweet Sophie.

It was with great sadness when I heard news second-hand from my employee that one of my client’s dogs had passed while I was out of town.  To add to the sadness was the shock that it was Sophie, the Bernese Mountain Dog who had just been five years old when I photographed her.  I contacted the owner to send my condolences and find out what happened.  Sophie was being treated for cancer, but had died suddenly of a heart attack at the vet’s office.   This post is a bit delayed, but my heart goes out to you, Liz, and sweet Max, who I am sure misses his big sister.   Some of my favorite photos in remembrance of Sophie….a life cut much too short.

Sophie was very regal and pretended that Max was just SUCH the little brother….I love her expression in this photo as Max starts to charge, what a look of disdain!  But with some patience, I was able to capture one of my potential clients’ favorite photos in my portfolio….the ultimate play session.

Sophie and Max.

That is Sophie in the front, with the smile on her face.

Sophie acting coy?  I’m not sure but this shot always makes me smile.

This particular photo hangs as a 30 x 40 wrapped canvas behind my register.   It always attracts the most attention of all the canvases I have displayed, and I am not surprised.  Wives call husbands over to look, husbands call wives over to look, and they usually stare for quite some time before saying “Wow, what a beautiful dog.”  And I just smile.

Rest in peace, sweet girl.   I will never forget that while I was thigh high in a snowdrift, photographing your brother, you decided it would be a great time to come over and lie down on top of me.  You just thought it was a good time for a cuddle…

“We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle; easily and often breached.  Unable to accept its awful gaps, we would still live no other way.  We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan.”
